Qatar Foundation non-academic buildings projects are delayed.  

Qatar Foundation (QF) in a move to support the country’s priority to become a knowledge-based economy as suggested by the Qatar National Vision 2030 is developing a string of hospitality structures all outside its Education City campus.  

Qatar Foundation non-academic buildings are all set in the central historical area where apparently the fishing village first agglomerated on the banks of the permanently dry Wadi Musheirib before hitting the Persian Gulf bay of Doha.

The 31 hectares Musheirib district was a derelict but an intensely active area of Doha and the new urban redevelopment scheme’s brief was to keep to this character.

Taking this into account and with a slight variation, the early projects being rolled out are the Mandarin Oriental Doha, the Park Hyatt Doha and the Al Wadi Hotel part of Accor’s Mgallery Collection.

The opening date for the luxury Mandarin Hotel scheduled to open in Musheirib this year has been pushed back by two years.  Delay that many understand as another way of signalling that the massive $5.5 billion redevelopment project is slipping behind schedule.

Amlak, a member of QF undertaking building of these 3 hotels within the Musheirib development is commonly pointed at as been involved with this slight alteration in these buildings timeline.

As amatter of fact, it is common for major projects to fall behind schedule in Qatar.  The country is going through major as well as frantic development of every kind and in every way.  Road, rail, real estate and infrastructure projects of private and public interest are under construction in preparation for the 2022 World Cup.

Supply chain, discrete approvals related red-tape and / or the regionally typical overwhelming expatriate workforce imports could explain such delay as all concerned would argue.  However specialists in the industry maintain that perhaps it is the extremely competitive construction sector that forces the contracting builders to accept unrealistic completion schedules just to win contracts.

Musheirib development first phase comprises low to mid-rise buildings to include speculative and governmental offices, townhouses, apartments, amenities, a mosque, a school and a cultural centre, etc.  Later phases will be about retail space, cinemas and more office and residential spaces.
